After filming the Smoky Mountain Big Rig Showdown in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, Chris spotted Austin Kiser rolling down I-40 in his recently purchased 1996 Peterbilt 379 which turned into a ride along and a firsthand look at what his truck does every day. Austin bought the Pete because he needed a shorter truck for local hauling. The 379 is powered by a 5EK CAT, backed by a 13-speed transmission, and rides on a 270-inch wheelbase. Austin pulls a 32ft MAC dump trailer hauling gravel, sand, rock, and other materials to asphalt plants around Tennessee and North Carolina. Chris rides with Austin as he delivers a load of 78-size gravel to an asphalt plant near Knoxville, hear that classic 5EK CAT working through the gears, and take a closer look at the truck’s clean but practical interior completed by the crew at Semi Casual. Austin also shares the history of Kiser Trucking, a family operation that dates back to the late 1960s or early 1970s and has grown to approximately 40 to 45 trucks. What showed up was an incredible piece of trucking history at the Smoky Mountain Big Rig Showdown in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. It's a remarkably original 1985 Peterbilt 359 short hood with only 136,000 original miles. Owner Justin Odom of Robbinsville, North Carolina, had been searching for the right old-school Peterbilt for years. Just when he was about ready to give up, this truck appeared on Facebook Marketplace. Justin found the listing only 15 minutes after it was posted, made an offer, and purchased the truck just days before bringing it to the show. This 359 still wears its original paint and features a 475 Cummins, original seats, period-correct lights and a rare Double Eagle sleeper with two teardrop rear windows. The sleeper still has its original refrigerator, mattress and color television—and they still work! Justin also has the original paperwork showing a 1985 purchase price of $74,344, including more than $10,000 for the Double Eagle sleeper. Chris caught up with Brandon at the 2026 Smoky Mountain Big Rig Showdown in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, for a complete walkaround of this North Sea Gray and Grabber Blue combination. The truck features a 565-horsepower Cummins X15, an 18-speed transmission, 3.42 rear gears, a 280-inch wheelbase and only around 4,500 miles. Built with help from Jeff at 12 Gauge Customs, Jim Higgins and several other talented craftsmen, the Peterbilt is packed with custom details. Highlights include a tapered miter-cut bumper, a 379-style grille surround, a custom diamond-pattern grille, single-square headlights, a 359 hood strip, glass watermelon lights, hidden air ride components, custom stainless deck plating and milled aluminum diamond accents surrounding the lights on the back of the sleeper. The interior by Spare Time Fab blends old-school and new-school styling with button-tuck upholstery, suede accents, custom floor mats and a two-stick setup. Brandon also transformed a used 2018 steel pneumatic tanker into a matching bottom-drop bulk trailer. The trailer was stripped down, smoothed, painted and customized with stainless-steel details, Shift fenders, glass-lens LED lights and diamond accents that carry the truck’s theme from front to back. The combination is known as “Understood Assignment,” and although it currently spends most of its time traveling to truck shows, Brandon plans to eventually put it to work hauling glass-related materials and pulling dump trailers. Jason Loyer of Loyer Farms gives us a detailed tour of “Tax Exempt,” the family’s beautifully restored 1989 Mack Superliner II, at the 2026 Smoky Mountain Big Rig Showdown in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. Jason and his family spent approximately two and a half years transforming the former dump truck back into a tractor. The build features a custom Valley Chrome bumper, metallic red and charcoal paint inspired by a Mack Superliner their father owned years ago, a handcrafted wood floor, custom fuel tanks, polished aluminum, six-inch exhaust stacks, the original Mack engine and transmission, and countless period-correct details. Because replacement parts for these older Mack trucks are not always available, the Loyer Farms team had to find, fabricate, restore, or custom-build many of the components. The truck was completed just in time for the 2026 Mid-America Trucking Show and will eventually return to work pulling a hopper trailer—although it may be reserved for fair-weather duty. CJ explains the handcrafted stainless work, air-ride front ends, custom deck plates, recessed frame sections, hidden fender brackets, lighting systems, interior work, and countless small details that separate these trucks from factory builds. Then we get into the two trucks where things really got out of control. Drew explains how his one-of-a-kind crew-cab Kenworth started as a relatively simple project before evolving into a fully customized show truck with PDI performance parts, motorized hookups, custom stainless fabrication, a handcrafted DEF tank, hidden wiring, a custom interior, and approximately 760 horsepower at the wheels—all while retaining its emissions equipment. The centerpiece is Dixieland Delight, a flat-glass Kenworth that was completely transformed for national-level competition. The Cummins was removed and replaced with a heavily modified CAT C16 built by PDI. The cab came off, the engine was moved forward, the entire engine compartment was wire-tucked, and nearly every visible component was either fabricated, polished, chromed, relocated, or redesigned. The result is approximately 1,500 horsepower at the wheels and a national championship-winning Kenworth filled with one-off details that most people will never notice.
