In this feature, Chris caught up with Don “DJ” Maxwell and take a closer look at his sharp-looking 2022 Peterbilt 389 while he’s hauling a John Deere S660 combine bound for Penn Yan, New York. The 389 DJ drives for McDonald Trucking sits on a 310-inch wheelbase and is powered by a fully rebuilt Cummins X15 that definitely isn’t stock. Behind it is a Muv-All electric-over-hydraulic detach trailer equipped with a full stainless package, including stainless outriggers, front box and front cover. Despite how good the truck looks, DJ is quick to point out that this is a working truck. Much of his time is spent hauling agricultural equipment in and out of farms and dirt lots, with much of his work taking him throughout the Midwest. DJ also talks about growing up in Wellsville, New York, how trucking has skipped through generations of his family, and how he got his start hauling agricultural and heavy equipment. We also take a look around the 389, including its eight-inch Dynaflex stove pipes, lighting setup and interior before heading out on the highway to get some rolling footage. And this one came together completely by chance. Chris happened to check Snap Map, saw DJ was only about 10 miles away, and they cooked up a plan to meet up and make a video. Drew walks Chris through an incredible collection of restored John Deere tractors, vintage Ford trucks, early construction equipment, dealer memorabilia, advertising and one-of-a-kind pieces collected over the years. A major focus of the collection is the John Deere M series, including M, MT, MI and MC crawler variations, along with unusual dealer conversions, industrial models and tractors finished in some extremely rare colors. Among the collection are a California Special, an export-only all-fuel MT, rare high-crop tractors, industrial John Deere MIs, MC crawlers and yellow, orange, red and even brown tractors with unique histories. Drew explains how dealers modified tractors for specific crops and regions—and how some of those ideas eventually influenced later factory-built John Deere models. But the collection goes well beyond tractors. We check out beautifully restored vintage Ford trucks, including F6 cab-overs and Marmon-Herrington four-wheel-drive Fords, along with early Melroe machines that helped lead to the modern Bobcat skid steer. Then we step into Drew’s recreated vintage John Deere dealership and service station, filled with original signs, dealer displays, new-old-stock parts, brochures, tools, oil cans, license plate toppers and countless small details designed to make the entire space feel like stepping back into the 1940s, ’50s and ’60s. The tour eventually moves into the Ford dealership, where Drew shares an even more personal piece of his collection—Stellar minibikes built by his grandfather’s company on Long Island during the 1960s and ’70s. That family history includes rare minibikes, a sidecar, a George Barris edition bike and the story behind the Stellar Spin-a-File, an early design connected to what would later become known as the Rolodex. Chris caught up with Cliff Stubblefield and his sons Miles and Max at the 2026 Smoky Mountain Big Rig Showdown in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, to check out their sharp 1998 Peterbilt 379. This isn't just a show truck. Cliff has owned the 379 for nearly 16 years, and it still earns its keep pulling a flatbed and hauling steel on runs between Alabama, Ohio, Chicago and back. With approximately 2.5 million miles, a 500 Detroit, 13-speed transmission and 3.70 rears, this Peterbilt has plenty of real working-truck history behind it. Cliff walks us through some of the custom touches, including the RoadWorks bumper and grille, Dane Nelson bug shield, RLK visor, six-inch Dynaflex stacks and the "Homer" nickname etched into the glass by his wife. We also get a look inside the cab, where Cliff, his wife and a friend completely redid the interior themselves, smoothing and color-matching the dash and adding wood-grain wrapped panels. At night, the truck comes alive with around 25 Grand General gold-and-amber watermelon lights, giving this hard-working 379 a clean classic look without going overboard. Chris caught up with Jordan from JSH the morning after the Laid Back on I-55 Truck Show to take a closer look at his 2023 Kenworth W900 known as “Slowpoke.” The name comes from a pickup his dad owned back in the 1980s, but there isn’t much “slow” about what JSH has built here. This was Jordan’s first brand-new truck, and aside from the paint, nearly everything you see was done in-house at their shop — including the boxes, exhaust, breathers, front air ride, and plenty of custom 12 Gauge components. The truck sits on a 291-inch wheelbase and keeps a simple, old-school look inspired by the trucks Jordan loves from the 1970s and ’80s. It also features custom pinstriping by Lady Lines, a unique deck plate, matching T-bar and bumper details, and a built-from-scratch engine assembled at JSH. Jordan explains that JSH can take a build anywhere from mild to wild, whether someone wants a dependable everyday working truck or something considerably more serious. “Slowpoke” still gets some work when Jordan can get away from the shop, but he describes it primarily as a rolling billboard for the family business. And the truck isn’t finished yet.
